Division Calculator
Divide one number by another and see the exact quotient, the whole part, the remainder and the result as a simplified fraction.
How to use it
- Enter two numbers — the answer updates as you type.
- Switch to the list tab to work through many numbers at once, left to right.
- The working underneath shows the substitution so you can check it by hand.
Examples
| 144 ÷ 12 | 12 |
| 17 ÷ 5 | 3.4 — 3 remainder 2 |
Division splits one number into equal parts of another, and gives back not just the decimal quotient but the whole-number part, the remainder and a simplified fraction — three different ways of expressing a division that doesn't come out evenly.
Worked example — splitting a bill unevenly
A £100 restaurant bill split 7 ways: 100 ÷ 7 = 14.2857…, or 14 remainder 2, or the fraction 100/7. In practice, the exact decimal (14.29 rounded) is what each person actually pays, while the remainder form (14 each, 2 left over) is more useful for splitting cash physically.
Questions people ask
Why can't I divide by zero?
Because no number multiplied by zero gives anything other than zero, so the question has no answer. It is undefined rather than infinite.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. Every calculation runs in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded and the page keeps working offline once it has loaded.
