Is it cheaper to leave the heating on low all day?
Generally no. A house loses heat faster the warmer it is than outside, so keeping it warm all day loses more total heat than reheating it. Heat pumps are the exception — they run best steadily.
How much does standby really cost?
For a typical household, single figures a year. It is worth switching off a games console, which can idle at 10 W or more, but not worth unplugging phone chargers.
