A Wi-Fi QR code puts your network name, security type and password into a single scannable square. A guest points their camera at it and the phone offers to join — no reading a twenty-character password off a scrap of paper, no typos, no asking twice.

It works natively on both iPhone and Android. Nothing needs to be installed on either side, and the code is generated here in your browser rather than on a server, so your password is never transmitted anywhere.

Getting the details right

  • The network name is case sensitive and must match exactly, including spaces and punctuation.
  • WPA covers WPA, WPA2 and WPA3 — pick it unless you specifically know otherwise.
  • WEP is only for genuinely old equipment. If you can, replace it; it has been broken for years.
  • Choose Open for a network with no password at all, and the password field disappears.
  • Only tick hidden if the network deliberately does not broadcast its name.

Where these codes are worth printing

Cafés and restaurants put them on table cards and menus. Hotels put them in the room compendium. Offices put them in reception and meeting rooms so visitors stop interrupting people to ask.

At home, a small card by the front door or on the fridge saves the same conversation with every visitor. Laminate it if it will be handled.

A word about security

The password is stored in the code as plain readable text. Anyone who scans it has it, and anyone who photographs the printed card can decode it later at their leisure.

That is an acceptable trade for a guest network. It is not acceptable for the network your work machines and network storage sit on. Most routers can run a separate guest network in a couple of clicks — use that, and this becomes a convenience with no downside.

If a code will not connect

  • Check the network name character by character. A capital letter in the wrong place is the usual culprit.
  • Confirm the security type matches what the router is actually using.
  • Special characters in a password are handled correctly here, but some routers store them differently — retype the password rather than pasting it.
  • 5 GHz-only networks will not appear on a device that supports 2.4 GHz only, however good the code is.

Questions people ask

Does this work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, on both, using the built-in camera. iOS has supported Wi-Fi QR codes since iOS 11 and Android since version 10. Older Androids may need a QR app.

Can someone steal my Wi-Fi password from the code?

Yes — that is how it works. The password is readable to anyone who scans or photographs it. Use it for a guest network, not your main one.

Does the code stop working if I change the password?

Yes. The old password is baked into the pattern, so you need to generate and print a new code whenever you change it.

Will these codes ever expire?

No. What you get is a static code — the data is encoded in the pattern itself, so there is no redirect service in the middle that could go down or start charging. Once printed, it works forever.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. The code is generated in your browser from the text you type, and a logo you add is read locally into the image. Nothing reaches a server, so there is nothing to log, track or leak.
