Why the US writes dates differently
Most of the world orders a date smallest-unit-last the way it's spoken — 'the 23rd of August, 2026' becomes 23/08/2026. The US instead follows the spoken order 'August 23rd, 2026', giving 08/23/2026 — a format almost nowhere else uses. Neither is more correct, but the mismatch is exactly why 03/04/2026 is ambiguous (3 April or March 4th?) unless you already know which convention the writer uses.
ISO 8601 (2026-08-23) sidesteps the argument entirely by always going largest-to-smallest: year, month, day. That ordering also happens to sort correctly as plain text, which is the real reason software defaults to it.
ISO week numbers explained
The ISO week number isn't simply 'days so far ÷ 7'. By the ISO 8601 rule, week 1 of a year is whichever week contains that year's first Thursday — equivalently, the week containing 4 January. Weeks run Monday to Sunday.
That rule has two consequences people trip over. Late-December dates can fall in week 1 of the following year (if the year ends on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, its last few days already belong to week 1 of next year), and early-January dates can fall in week 52 or 53 of the previous year for the same reason. And because 52 × 7 = 364, one day short of a common year, most years have 52 weeks but some have 53 — years where 1 January falls on a Thursday, or leap years where it falls on a Wednesday.
Day of year, days remaining, and quarter
Day of year (1–366) shows up in Julian-date-style logging and some scientific and agricultural contexts. Days remaining is the same figure counted down instead of up — useful for anything measured against a year-end deadline. Quarter (Q1–Q4) is the standard unit for financial and business reporting.

Questions people ask
Why does the week number on this page not match 'day of year ÷ 7'?
Because ISO week numbering doesn't start counting from 1 January — it starts from whichever Monday begins the week that contains the year's first Thursday. Most years that's very close to 1 January, but not always, which is why a simple division gives the wrong answer near the start or end of the year.
Is today's date the same everywhere in the world right now?
No. Because time zones are offset from UTC by different amounts, it can already be tomorrow in Tokyo while it's still today in Los Angeles. This page shows the date according to your own device's clock and time zone.
Why do some years have 53 ISO weeks instead of 52?
52 weeks is only 364 days, one short of a 365-day year. The leftover day (or two, in a leap year) gets absorbed into an extra week 53 whenever 1 January falls on a Thursday, or on a Wednesday in a leap year.
