Dividing fractions uses the reciprocal method — flip the second fraction and multiply: a/b ÷ c/d = a/b × d/c = ad / bc. Flipping and multiplying works because dividing by a number and multiplying by its reciprocal are the same operation.
Worked example — how many servings fit
A jug holds 1/2 a litre and each serving is 1/4 litre. How many servings? 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 1/2 × 4/1 = 4/2 = 2 servings. Framed as a question — 'how many quarters fit into a half' — the answer of 2 is intuitive, and it's exactly what the reciprocal method computes.

Why do you flip the second fraction?
Dividing by a number is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal. Dividing by 1/4 asks how many quarters fit in — which is multiplying by 4.
