Simplifying Fractions Calculator

Reduce any fraction to its lowest terms, with the greatest common factor shown, plus the decimal, percentage and mixed-number equivalents.

Formula
divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor

How to use it

  • Type the numerator and denominator of each fraction.
  • The answer is simplified automatically and shown as a decimal, a percentage and a mixed number.
  • The working underneath is the same method you would use on paper.

Examples

48/188/3
36/483/4

Simplifying a fraction reduces it to the smallest equivalent numerator and denominator by dividing both by their greatest common factor — 48/18 and 8/3 represent exactly the same value, but 8/3 is the form worth reading, comparing or reporting.

Worked example

36/48: the GCF of 36 and 48 is 12, so 36 ÷ 12 = 3 and 48 ÷ 12 = 4, giving 3/4. Dividing by the full GCF in one step avoids the slower route of repeatedly halving both numbers, which can stop early at a partially-simplified fraction like 9/12 if you're not careful to keep going.

Questions people ask

How do I know a fraction is fully simplified?

When the greatest common factor of the numerator and denominator is 1 — there is no whole number left that divides both.
