Multiplying fractions is the most direct of the four operations — no common denominator needed. Multiply the numerators together, multiply the denominators together, then simplify: a/b × c/d = ac / bd.
Worked example — a fraction of a fraction
A recipe portion needs 2/3 of a batch, and the batch itself is only 3/4 the size of the standard one. The actual fraction of the standard batch needed is 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2 — multiplying fractions is exactly how 'a fraction of a fraction' gets resolved into one number.
