Final Grade Calculator

Working backwards from a target grade tells you exactly what the final exam needs to score, given the grade already secured on everything else: required = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. It turns a vague worry — 'can I still get a B?' — into a concrete number to aim for, or an early, useful piece of bad news if the target is out of reach.

Worked example

Current grade 82%, final worth 40%, aiming for 90%: required = (90 − 82×0.60) ÷ 0.40 = (90 − 49.2) ÷ 0.40 = 102%. Since scores can't exceed 100%, that B (or whatever grade 90% represents) is mathematically out of reach — worth knowing before the exam rather than after it.

Reading an impossible or easy result

• A required score over 100% means the target grade cannot be reached, however well the final goes.
• A required score of 0% or below means the target is already locked in regardless of the final.
• The higher the final's weight, the more it can move the overall grade in either direction — a 50%-weighted final swings outcomes far more than a 10%-weighted one.
