Grade Calculator
Work out your overall course grade from weighted assignments, exams and projects — and see the letter grade it lands on.
How to use it
- Add a row for each graded item with your score and its weight.
- Weights do not have to total 100 — anything else is scaled proportionally.
- The letter grade uses the common US scale; check your syllabus for local cut-offs.
Examples
| HW 88 (20%), Mid 76 (30%), Final 82 (50%) | 81.4% — B− |
A course grade is a weighted average of everything graded, where each item's weight reflects how much it counts toward the final result: grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ weight. Homework, midterms and finals rarely count equally, so a simple average of the raw scores gives the wrong answer whenever the weights differ — which is nearly always.
Worked example
Homework 88% at 20% weight, midterm 76% at 30% weight, final 82% at 50% weight: (88×0.20 + 76×0.30 + 82×0.50) ÷ 1.00 = 17.6 + 22.8 + 41.0 = 81.4%, a B−. A plain average of the three scores would give 82%, overstating the result because it ignores that the weaker midterm carries real weight.
